RON NESLER

COACH

Coach Ron Nesler was an integral part of Herrin Tiger athletics for decades, both at the junior high and high school. In essence, he was an instructor of game fundamentals that led to sustained success. A 1963 graduate of HHS where he competed in multiple sports, Nesler pursued his love for sports through coaching multiple sports. But it is basketball where he spent most of his career, working tirelessly to teach and nurture young athletes. Inducted into the Illinois Coaches Association Hall of Fame for 50 years of service, Nesler will be long remembered for his contributions to the Herrin Unit 4 School District.

COACH

Coach Dusty Mallow is a longtime successful cross country and track coach at HHS, having coached both boys and girls over the years. His teams claimed 15 River to River Conference championships, including six boys titles in cross country (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015) and four girls titles (2014-2017). Additionally, Mallow's girls teams captured six league titles (2013-2018); four regionals championships, and one sectional title. The 1978 HHS grad earned SICA Coach of the Year honors twice in 2011 and 2015.

MIKE CHIAVENTONE

FRIEND ATHLETE

First as an athlete and then later as business leader, Michael J. (Mike) Chiaventone was a Herrin Tiger through and through. A three sport athlete, Mike was a basketball standout, leading his team in scoring his junior and senior years. For his efforts, he was selected All State Honorable Mention, All South, and South 7 All Conference. A graduate of St. Louis College of Pharmacy, Mike went to work at Moroni Drugs in Herrin and became the sole owner in 1984. He was a proud financial supporter of HHS Athletics and employed many student athletes while also serving the district as a board member.

Evelyn was a 1942 graduate of Herrin High School. She is a life long resident of Herrin and a devoted, loyal fan of HHS. She can always be counted on for support of all Herrin High School teams. Evelyn, and her husband Joe, first began to attend Herrin High School sporting events in the 1930's. She has been a fixture ever since. Evelyn is always at the games with a quick story, kind words, and a great smile. Evelyn's passion for sports so contiguous. With over 80 plus years of support and counting, Evelyn is a familiar face at events and is the definition of a "True Friend of Herrin Athletics".

MIKE MOONEYHAM

COACH ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

Mike has spent most of his life as a Herrin Tiger. He was a student-athlete and a 1977 graduate of HHS. Mike was hired as a teacher and coach in 1998 where he served until 2006. Mike was the head basketball coach on the 2002 team that finished 2nd in the Class "A" State Basketball Tournament held in Peoria. He also coached football and golf while at Herrin. Finally, Mike became the Athletic Director where he served from 2006 until his retirement in 2018. He has come full circle at Herrin. Mike is proud to have served Herrin High School in all capacities and definitely is a "Tiger" through and through.

TJ Creek was a long time legendary and distinguished radio personality for the Herrin Sports Programs. He worked all aspects of broadcasting, as he did play by play and color commentary for a variety of HHS Sports. TJ's radio career spanned many years with many different partners. He loved the Tigers and he loved his job with the radio and was a "Friend of Herrin Athletics" through and through.

The 2010 Track Team was Conference Champions and Sectional Champions. They won the Class A State Championship. The team scored 61.5 points. The 4x100 Relay Team set the State Record of 42.13. The 4x100 and 4x200 Relay Teams were State Champions. The team had three individual State Champions.

Paul, a business leader in Herrin, was a "Go to Guy" for Herrin Athletics for many years. His contributions, loyalty, and support for the athletic program at Herrin cannot be measured. Paul was always ready to help in any way, in all sports at HHS. He was an avid fan and never missed a home football or basketball game and seldom missed any away games as well. Paul was inducted to the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1992. For his devoted service and loyalty to the sports program. Paul is definitely a "Friend of Athletics".

For all his service and contributions to HHS, Eric is truly a Friend of Herrin Athletics.

The 1941 Herrin Township High School located in Colp, Illinois won the IHSAA Boys Basketball Championship by defeating East St. Louis 41-31.

RAY CHAPMAN

BASEBALL

Ray grew up and spent a great deal of his childhood in Herrin, Illinois. Later, he made it to the major leagues of professional baseball and played from 1912-1920. Ray was having a great career when he was hit by a pitched ball and died on August 16, 1920. Ray is the only major league baseball player to be killed by a pitched ball in the history of Major League Baseball.

Albert "Gebo" Sizemore was a true "Friend of Herrin Athletics." You name it and "Gebo" did it during his tenure at HHS. You could always county on him for great support and friendly advice. His support of Tiger Athletics was one of great dedication and pride. "Gebo" loved sports and was a familiar figure at HHS sporting events.

Mike attended Herrin High School from 1970-1974. He played on the 1972-73 Basketball Team that is already in the Herrin High School Hall of Fame. After graduating in 1974, Mike embarked on his true love, broadcasting. From 1976 to present day, he has been regarded as the "Voice of the Tigers." Mike is a true professional, a tiger through and through and is synonymous with Herrin Tiger Athletics.

GLORIA BONALI

Gloria attended Herrin High School from 1975-1949. Unfortunately, at this time, there were no athletics for girls. She sure made up for it in college. Gloria attended SIU-C and participated in softball, tennis, volleyball, basketball, field hockey, and archery. She was elected into the SIU Hall of Fame in 1983. After college Gloria became a world class softball player.

1956 BASKETBALL TEAM

The 1956 Herrin Tiger Basketball Team, led by Coach Lee Cabutti, finished the season with a 28 and 3 record. This team won the South 7 Conference Title for the first time in school history with a 11 and 1 record. They also won the Pyramid Tournament and Regional Tournament. Richard "Itchy" Jones was the Elk's MVP as well being selected to the Southern Illinois All Star Team.

1984-85 WRESTLING TEAM

The 1985 Herrin Tiger Wrestling Team was specular. Led by coaches Roger Piapp and Jim Starnes. They were Carterville Tournament Champions, South 7 Conference Champions, and Regional Champions. Their record of 15 and 0 was the first undefeated regular season team in the school's history.

1993 SOFTBALL TEAM

The 1993 Herrin Tiger Softball Team lead by Bruce Jilek and Byron Kuehner complied a record of 28 win and 3 losses. They won the South 7 Conference, Regional Champions, Sectional Champions, and eventually finished 2nd in Class AA State. All five graduating seniors received softball scholarships.

EARL LEE

COACH

Coach Lee accomplished a feat that no other coach had done before or since, when he led the Tigers to the 1957 State Basketball Championship. At this time, there was only one class in Illinois High School Basketball, which made winning the state title even more impressive. The Tiger record of 31-2 still stands as the most wins in one season. Coach Lee, a mathematics teacher, also coached football and track both as assistants and as a head coach.

ROBERT HUTCHISON

COACH

Coach Hutchison was an assistant coach on the 1957 State Basketball team as well as an assistant in football and track. After 1957 season, Coach Hutchison, a social studies teacher, became the head coach in all three sports; football, basketball, and track. The 1980 softball team was truly a special group. Led by star pitcher, Sunny Clark, the team did not lose a single game until the State Championship game against Chicago Harlem Loves Park. The Tigers were 22-1 overall. The team was coached by Bruce Jilek and Byron Kuehner.

The 1981 HHS Softball Team was basically a carbon copy of the previous year. They did not lose a game during the regular season with Nina Calcaterra leading the way. Herrin advanced to the State Finals and dropped a heartbreaker to Quincy Notre Dame 2-1. The Tigers finished with a record of 24-1. The Tigers were coached by Bruce Jilek and Bryon Kuehner.

Charles K. Jack for more than forty years devoted his energies and talents to making Herrin High School and its athletic department one of the best. Mr. Jack will be remembered as an inspiring leader and as a great and good friend. He was patient, soft spoken man who gave willingly of his time whenever a student needed help. As a coach, he turned many athletes in the right director. Not only did he teach his boys how to play but how to lose. Good sportsmanship was his by-word. Mr. Jack gave of himself. He gave long hours to his classroom, to the athletic department, to his family, and to his community. For forty-one years, he gave to Herrin and to Herrin's youth.

Merle Jones, sports editor for the Southern Illinoisan from 1949 to 1977. Through his newspaper columns, he had an impact of sports throughout Southern Illinois. His insight into sports and his memory of games, players, and their statistics was legendary. Through his columns, players and coaches were given state-wide recognition; and in many cases, their careers were enhanced by his writing. Inducted into the Illinois Basketball Association Hall of Fame, named the first winner of the William McAndrew Award for contributions of sports in Southern Illinois, and recognized by countless numbers of associations and organizations.
